Local Garden Care in Roxburgh Park
Your GMC Team in Roxburgh Park
Roxburgh Park is a busy, diverse residential suburb built around its shopping and rail precinct, with a mix of established family homes and townhouse developments. Gardens here tend to be practical, low-maintenance family yards with a strong focus on usable lawn space.
What we know about Roxburgh Park gardens
- With many young families, Roxburgh Park lawns take heavy foot traffic โ a hard-wearing Buffalo or Kikuyu, mown at the right height, copes best and repairs fastest.
- Smaller townhouse blocks benefit from regular edging and tidy hedging, which makes a compact outdoor space feel considerably larger.
- The clay-based soils here compact quickly under use, so seasonal core aeration is what lets a family lawn recover between summers.

About Roxburgh Park
Roxburgh Park is a master-planned suburb bounded by Craigieburn to the north, the Craigieburn railway line to the east, Somerton Road to the south and Aitken Boulevard, which skirts the Greenvale Reservoir, to the west. The name comes from Roxburgh, a farm named by Thomas Brunton around 1885. An 1889 plan for a garden suburb on this land, to be called Hopetoun, was stopped by the 1890s depression, and in 1951 the Moonee Valley Racing Club bought the property as an investment. The state land corporation began planning in 1988, and the suburb was established in 1992 with around 7000 house blocks planned. Shopping centres on Somerton Road and Pascoe Vale Road are the local hubs.
Soil, water and weather
Most Roxburgh Park homes were built from the 1990s onward on land graded for the estate, and that shapes what happens under the lawn. Topsoil is often a thin layer over compacted clay, and the clay is the reactive basalt kind found across the north, so lawns brown off quickly in a hot spell and puddle after a wet week. The suburb is exposed to the wind as well: the nearby Melbourne Airport station records its windiest months from August to October, which dries out spring growth on open blocks. Building soil with topdressing in spring, rather than chasing a dry lawn with daily watering, gives grass a deeper root zone to draw on.
Jobs that suit Roxburgh Park gardens
- Synthetic turf: Narrow side strips and small backyards on the newer Roxburgh Park lots are often the hardest places to keep grass alive. Synthetic turf suits those spots and play areas, and it is quoted per job once the area is measured.
- Lawn mowing: Roxburgh Park lawns range from small townhouse yards to standard family blocks, so prices on our guide run from about $45 to around $65 a visit. A weekly or fortnightly booking gets the lower per-visit price.
- Hedge trimming: Screening shrubs planted along fences when the estate was new have had around thirty years to grow. Hedge trimming starts from $60, and bringing a screen back to a size that is easy to maintain is best started in early spring.
