Your GMC Team in Reservoir
Reservoir is one of Melbourne's largest suburbs by area, made up almost entirely of post-war family homes on quarter-acre style blocks, with Edwardes Lake inside the suburb and the Merri Creek along its western edge.
What we know about Reservoir gardens
- Reservoir's big open lawns are a different job to a courtyard โ mowing in alternating directions each visit prevents ruts and gives a noticeably better finish.
- Long-tenanted and long-held properties here are the classic overgrown-block reset: trees first, then shrubs, then the grass in staged passes, then edging and mulch.
- Clay soils across Reservoir go boggy in winter and set hard in summer; spring coring with gypsum into the holes is what changes that over two seasons.

About Reservoir
Reservoir is named after the three Preston reservoirs, the first built in 1863, which are still part of the water supply for Melbourne's inner and western suburbs. The Maroondah Aqueduct, finished in 1891, brought them water from the Watts River. Robert Hoddle surveyed the area in 1837 from parts of two parishes, Jika Jika and Keelbundoora, and the Rose Shamrock Hotel on Plenty Road dates from 1854, but Reservoir only became a suburb in its own right when its post office opened around 1921. Edwardes Lake Park began as 14 hectares given to the people of Preston in 1914 by Thomas Dyer Edwardes, and swimming in the lake was allowed from 1919 to 1939. Most streets are brick or weatherboard family homes, with a growing number of new developments.
Soil, water and weather
The basalt plain under Reservoir gives the suburb its heavy, reactive clay, and on a big block that clay sets the rhythm of the year: slow to drain from June to August, then shrinking and opening cracks along paths and driveways by February. Hot northerly winds cross the open streets in summer and dry out exposed beds within days. Because blocks here are large, small habits add up. A deep mulch on the beds, a raised cut through summer and watering early in the morning keep a big garden going without a huge water bill, and turning unused lawn into mulched beds cuts the workload further.
Jobs that suit Reservoir gardens
- Garden clean ups: On quarter-acre style Reservoir blocks, a fruit tree, a vegetable patch and decades of shrubs can become a big job. A full clean up is quoted per job, and all the prunings and green waste are taken away on the day.
- Lawn mowing: A Reservoir backyard that has been left for a season may need an overgrown first cut, which is quoted, before it drops back to a regular rate. After that, weekly or fortnightly visits get the discounted per-visit price.
- Hedge trimming: Long side and rear boundary hedges are common on Reservoir's wide blocks. Hedge trimming starts from $60 and goes up with the length and height, so a long hedge kept on a regular trim avoids the bigger job of cutting back years of growth.

Is it worth keeping lawn on a big Reservoir block?
