About Airport West
Airport West is bounded by the Calder Highway on the south, the Tullamarine Freeway on the east and the Western Ring Road on the north-west. The name comes from its position west of Essendon Airport rather than from having an airport of its own. The area once shared a name with neighbouring Niddrie, until aviation businesses along Matthews Avenue petitioned in the late 1950s for a name that better described where they were. Before it was subdivided in the 1950s and 1960s, much of the land was two farms, Spring Park and Niddrie. Many streets honour aviators, including Australian First World War flyers and entrants in the 1919 Britain to Australia air race. Westfield Airport West opened in the northern corner in 1976.
Soil, water and weather
Airport West sits on the open basalt plain a few kilometres from the Bureau of Meteorology's Melbourne Airport station, which averages about 537 mm of rain a year and January days of 26.7ยฐC. Summers are dry and the clay soil sets hard, so a lawn cut short in December is usually brown by February. Most house blocks are flat, which makes watering even, but clay that has been parked on or walked over packs down tight around driveways and paths. Grasses that handle dry heat, mown at 35 mm or higher in summer, and beds mulched before the hot weather hold up best.
Jobs that suit Airport West gardens
- Commercial maintenance: Business premises along Matthews Avenue and the streets around the shopping centre need lawns, verges and garden beds kept tidy on a set schedule. Commercial grounds maintenance is quoted per site, based on the area and how often it is serviced.
- Lawn mowing: A typical post-war Airport West house lawn, front and back, sits in the standard family lawn band on our pricing page at about $50 to $65. Smaller unit lawns start from around $45 a visit.
- Synthetic turf: Synthetic turf suits narrow side strips and small rear yards where grass keeps dying off in the summer heat. It is quoted per job after we measure up the area.
- Hedge trimming: Front hedges on wide Airport West streets are on show, and an uneven top or a bare base stands out. Regular shaping keeps them full to the ground. Hedge trimming starts from $60.

Questions
Airport West Garden Care FAQ
Why is it called Airport West if there is no airport in it?
Because it lies west of Essendon Airport, which was Melbourne's main airport until 1970. Aviation businesses on Matthews Avenue asked for the name in the late 1950s, and Airport West is said to be the only locality in Australia with Airport in its name that does not contain one.
How hot does it get for lawns in Airport West?
The nearby Melbourne Airport weather station averages 26.7ยฐC on January days, with plenty of hotter spells, and only about 537 mm of rain a year. Lawns on clay here need a higher summer cut and deep, infrequent watering to stay green through to autumn.
